The Birth of Snuggle Bug Baby Bows

It all started with the hunt to find a trendy, yet adorable and affordable, hair accessory for my daughter’s quickly approaching first birthday party. (I found this to be the most stressful and celebrated milestone in my daughters first year.) Her delicate little locks had just begun to sprout from the top of her head and much like her mother, at the same age; she suffered the curse of fine hair and not much of it. Being haunted by the tales of my grandmother scotch taping bows to my head, because I had no hair, and not wanting my daughter to suffer the same fate, the search began for that perfect hair accessory.

One would think that trying to find a fashionably sweet hair accessory for a baby, would not be that challenging. With all the new products and choices out there, how could you go wrong? Well unfortunately, after numerous unsuccessful attempts at trying to get anything to stay in her hair, I was frustrated and perplexed at the level of difficulty involved in this task. Any thing that I liked would not stay in her hair and anything that stayed in her hair, I didn’t like. Furthermore, it all seemed large and out of place on top of her little head.

The idea hit me one day, when discussing with my best friend Lisa, our desire to find some great hair clips for both of our girls. I was telling her how there was a lot of cute stuff out there, but nothing would stay in Mikayla’s baby fine tresses. It was frustrating trying to find the desired cute hair product and having no success. The main question seemed to be; “What else could you do to get them to hold?” Therefore, I asked myself “How can I improve the product I desire to suit my needs?”

Over a frozen drink, a bag of brownies, and two hours of naptime, the idea and the concept of the “no slip grip clip” were born. I would apply a gripper inside of a clip to hold her hair softly, yet securely, holding them there for hours. Consequently, I made my daughter her very own hand designed clips, with the patterns I desired. Because they were made just for her, they were even more precious then anything that I could have found in a store.  It was also amazing the amount that my previously “cute little boy” had become such a “sweet little girl”. From the simply addition of a tiny bow on top her nearly bald head, her gender was clear and never confused again! The rest of the fairy tale really happened by accident.

I started developing bows with different colors and designs, giving them to my friends for their little girls, which they absolutely adored. Other Moms’ started asking my friends where they got the cute bows and through them started paying for the bows, all claiming that they finally found something that truly held baby and toddler hair. At first, I did not believe that people wanted to pay for them, however the truth was people loved them and wanted more.

Then one day I was at the Doctor’s office with my daughter, when a little girl there was wearing a pair of my bows. The Mom of this little girl was telling me how she absolutely loved them but had gotten them from a friend, of a friend and she did not know where to get more.

I remember sitting there listening to her talk, the whole time my heart pounding with excitement at this totally random encounter!! That was the turning point when I knew that I really had a product that people loved. After all it is one thing to hear from your family and friends that they think your product is great, but a total stranger was another thing. With some encouragement, I was convinced to approach my first retail store.  Initially I had myself convinced that I was just a regular “Stay at home Mom” and that this was not going to go anywhere, but I quickly changed my mind when I heard the great feedback and  encouragement from all my friends and family. My very own business blossomed from there.

The first store I approached said “yes, we would love to sell your product”, followed by a whole bunch of “no thank you’s ”. It was hard not to feel defeated when a retailer told me that they were not interested. However, through persistence I have gotten more “yes’s” and a lot of great feedback about my product. In the process of this journey, I have met some great people, with whom I have developed lasting professional relationships and even some new and amazing friendships.

At times, it was hard trying to sell myself and my home based business; I was trying to break into a very competitive market, against large companies and organizations with massive budgets for sales, marketing and production. However, with much persistence and the support of my family, we went from just my kitchen table, with my glue gun, clips, scissors and ribbon, to having a network of other fabulous mom’s, also making our products today. We have become a real player in the market of baby hair accessories, with our innovative ideas and our willingness to try new and different things. It has definitely made for some long “bow nights” as my husband calls them, but every time a new retailer says yes, I get as excited as the first time and even more dedicated.

I believe in my product, what it has to offer, and most of all, I believe in myself. With the support and encouragement of my family and friends, this business has grown from that first “yes” to so much more. I love what I do. I love knowing that our product is putting a smile on someone else’s face when they see their little one wearing our bows. We have a knack for creating one of a kind hair bows’, which are sure to make any little one stand out from the rest of the crowd. Every time we come up with a new design or idea, I remember why I did this. I have done it because I want other parents to have the same feeling that I did, after finding that perfectly precious hair accessory, for their perfectly precious little one. And still today, five years after all this started, I get butterflies whenever I see a little cutie sporting a Snuggle Bug!
